Meme: 5 peices of music
Loth has tagged me for five pieces of music that mean something to me. I was excited by this but it’s a really hard one. There are so many songs that mean something to me – and I’m so pedantic about listing things correctly – that I’ll have to resign myself to the fact that I can’t spend hours thinking of the five most meaningful songs; I will just list songs that come to mind now and trust that no-one will hold it against me! These are not my favourite songs whatsoever - just ones with ‘meaning’.
1. Romeo – Basement Jaxx
James and I spent a late night (the night we first started going out together) in Favorit on Lothian Road, talking and drinking wine at a candle-lit table until 3am. A Basement Jaxx song was playing and we both thought it was ‘Romeo’ but it wasn’t. ‘Romeo’ still reminds us both of that night though so it became ‘our song’.
2. Uptown Girl – Billy Joel
There are many songs that remind me of being young but this one particularly stands out. It was Number 1 in the charts when my sister was born in 1983. The sad thing is that this was one of my ‘must have’ songs to be played at my wedding so that my mum, sister and I could have a boogie together but the DJ played the Westlife version instead (at which point my heart totally sank). I spent weeks making an explicit list of songs which he agreed to play but he hardly played any of them. It was pretty devastating to me at the time. But I’m over it. Gulp.
3. Mixed Up World – Sophie Ellis-Bextor
This is a bit of a cheesy song but it helped me when I was going through a bad time a few years back. I used to listen to it on the bus on my way to work and it was really relevant to me at the time. Sometimes simple messages really help!
4. All at Sea – Jamie Cullum
This song reminds me of lunchtimes spent in Princes Street Gardens when I was working. I went there most days for eight years – rain or shine (or snow) – sat on a bench and listened to music to try to keep myself sane. I would then walk through the graveyard and up the steps to Princes Street on my way back to work, which was often strangely exhilarating if I was listening to a song like this.
5. Fergus Sings the Blues – Deacon Blue
One summer when I was about 12, we went on holiday up north to Forres. I listened to Deacon Blue the whole way there in the back of the car and it fitted in so perfectly with the amazing scenery. I was breath taken, and that feeling comes back when I hear this song.
I think I’ll actually be brave and tag people for this one! Princess Polly and Nikki, you are the chosen ones!

It was difficult picking tracks that “meant” something rather than just “OOH! That’s one of my favourites, I’d like to tell people about that one!” wasn’t it? And if you’re anything like me you are now wondering whether you should have picked 5 completely different tracks instead!

I love “Romeo” too. And I loathe the Westlife version of Uptown Girl! It sucks, you must have been so gutted!

Oh and I’ll do this as soon as I can come up with my five songs, I think it’s going to be quite difficult!
