Chips, juice and a burger
I’ve been reminiscing. VH1 keep showing 90s songs as if the 90s were a long time ago. Okay, I suppose the 90s were a long time ago now, but sometimes it feels like yesterday, and I only just got used to the idea that the 80s were a long time ago.
Anyway, I was thinking about this one time in 1996 (I was 15) when I was uptown with my friends Sarah and Leesa. They were conducting some kind of questionnaire for a school project, and I was just standing around watching them. Earlier that day I’d bought The Bluetones’ new CD single ‘Marblehead Johnson’ and also one of their T-shirts. I loved them sooooo much and had done for a couple of years.
So, I was watching the hoards of people walking by on Princes Street and I did a double-take on someone I thought I recognised; he looked really like Mark Morriss, the lead singer of The Bluetones. It couldn’t be! I must be mistaken. Then I looked at the people around him and I saw the drummer! I started shaking uncontrollably and stared at them in absolute shock! As soon as my ability to speak returned, I convinced Sarah (who also loved them) and Leesa (who had no idea who they were) to come and trek with me down the street following them!! We lost them.
Disheartened, we went to McDonalds for some lunch. And who should be in there??? Mark Morriss from The Bluetones!!! I just about fainted. I couldn’t even speak to him but Leesa took my CD over to him and got his autograph for me. Sarah provided the pen (and treasured it afterwards – I wonder if she still has it?)! Then we all stood awkwardly around him not saying anything. He was pleased that I’d just bought his CD. He said they had a day off and how nice it is in Edinburgh. We all agreed sheepishly. Then he politely left us to meet his friends.
I wrote in my diary:
‘29/9/96 – YESTERDAY I MET MARK MORRISS FROM THE BLUETONES! I really can’t believe it and the weirdest part is that I feel awful about it. I have a sinking feeling in my stomach. I hope this feeling ends soon because I can’t concentrate on anything. I’m so star struck it’s unbelievable!’
And with the importance it deserved, I also noted:
‘He had a tray with chips, juice and a burger.’
Anyway, I just had to get that story out. It’s not something I think about often but when I do think about it, I just can’t get over it. One of my absolute FAVOURITE bands ever walked past me in the street. It was a dream come true! Here’s one of their wee ditties:

It’s funny to see the little details that were so important at the time, but then you look back at them and think- why was this such a big deal?

I’ve never really been a big bluetones fan but I can probably imagine how excited i would be if i saw someone i’d been obsessed with at that age (i cant remember who i fancied then though!). In fact, when my mate took me to see Justin Timberlake at the SECC in May, I couldn’t even get my head around the fact that he was IN THE SAME BUILDING AS ME! Anyway . . . I’m just sad. I know what you mean about only getting used to the eighties being far away too!!! It is mad to think that the millennium was eight years ago. EIGHT YEARS! Where has the time gone?
