Our anticlimax

Saturday, 8th December 2007

Tonight was a bit of a disaster. James’ work’s Christmas night out was tonight and I was supposed to be driving him there (to Bonnyrigg), then driving myself home, then picking him up later. I was a bit worried about doing it anyway just because I’ve never driven that far on my own, it was rainy and dark etc. but we didn’t expect the weather to be as bad as it was. The further along the road we got, the worse the snowy weather was becoming. I stayed calm at first but at one point I couldn’t even see if I was on the right side of the road. Then I saw a car that had skidded into a ditch and I started to really panic that I was going to end up the same. I got so panicky that even James thought it was best to go home. So I pulled over and he drove us back.

I was so upset and felt so, so awful because he was really looking forward to his night out and I had really wanted to be able to take him. He’s disappointed but he totally understands because I’m just not experienced enough to drive for the first time in conditions like that. I didn’t feel safe at all and I was trembling so much that I wouldn’t have been in the right frame of mind to drive. It’s so annoying that this had to happen tonight of all nights! We did wonder if James should drive himself there and stay overnight at the hotel but he decided not to as he would end up being really late for his meal, and we can’t really afford it anyway.

After the big anticlimax, we decided to eat the apple pie (all of it) and ice cream that was meant for Christmas. I think it helped!

Don’t beat yourself up about panicing whilst driving in the snow - I know people up here in the frozen north who refuse to drive anywhere when there is snow let alone somewhere you have never been before. When I am driving in snow the technique could be described as ‘driving miss daisy’ because I go really really slowly and leave big gaps between me and the car in front.

Thanks John! It’s just a shame that James had to miss out on his night out.

A Christmas do in Bonnyrigg?? I confess I am intrigued! I have an office in Binnyrogg and we always do the pairty in Edinburgh. I am clearly unaware of the hot party venue in Ronnybigg!

James also works in Bonnyrigg! The party was at The Retreat Castle Hotel. Apparently it was a great night and he was missed… :(
