Are you going out tonight?

Saturday, 14th July 2007

Just got back from the hairdressers. Oh how I hate going there. It’s everything I hate rolled into one. I hate sitting in front of a mirror with a stranger touching me. (That actually sounds a bit sordid, doesn’t it.) I hate talking about my appearance. ‘What would you like done today?’ I just want my hair cut please.

I hate making small talk. In hairdressing school, hairdressers are given a lesson on how to make conversation with customers. There are two questions they can ask you (they may ask one or the other, or sometimes even both): ‘are you going out tonight?’ and ‘are you going anywhere on holiday this year?’ My answers are nearly always no. A look of incomprehension comes over them; ‘she’s not going out tonight, and she isn’t going on holiday this year… oh my god, what the hell does she do with her time?’

I was especially nervous about going this time because the last time the hairdresser gave me a row about using my straighteners too much. She said my hair is ruined. I really don’t think it is though. I mean, yeah, if you don’t straighten my hair, it looks crap but it was always like that. THAT’S WHY I STARTED STRAIGHTENING IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What I don’t get though is why they give me a lecture about straighteninig too much, but then they go and straighten it for me once they’ve cut it. I’m contemplating cutting my own hair from now on.
